The moment Roy Williams arrived in Chicago, he was installed as the “No. 1″ receiver, a guy who would start over last year’s leading receiver Johnny Knox.
This struck us odd. So did the notion that Williams finally gave the Bears receiving group what they lacked: size or a “veteran presence.” It was as if Williams’ awful run in Dallas had never happened.
Three weeks into the Williams experiment, more folks in Chi-town are starting to wonder what’s going on. Dan Pompeii of the Chicago Tribune writes that Williams has shown nothing in camp or in the preseason to prove he’s worthy of playing over Knox.
(Quite the opposite. Williams dropped two passes in the last preseason game andadmitted his fitness level isn’t where it needs to be.)
Mark Potash of the Chicago Sun-Times writes Tuesday that Williams needs to get in shape, blaming Williams’ conditioning for his struggles.
Somewhere, Jerry Jones sits smiling and happy that Williams is no longer the Cowboys’ problem.
