Von Miller could miss this weeks game after thumb surgery

Von Miller, Ryan McBeanAP
The Broncos could be forced to continue their playoff push without their star rookie linebacker.
Lindsay Jones of the Denver Post reports that Miller had thumb surgery Tuesday to repair torn ligaments in his thumb. He was hurt sometime in the fourth quarter of the 16-13 win over the Chargers, but insisted on returning to the game after getting the thumb taped. Miller dropped Ryan Mathews Mike Tolbert for a loss on a key third down play in overtime, setting up a longer field goal for Nick Novak that Novak wound up missing.

Charges to replace injured Marcus McNeil with Jared Gaither

Marcus McNeillAP
The Chargers’ offensive line, racked by injuries this season, has seen yet another member land on injured reserve.
The team has announced that left tackleMarcus McNeill, who suffered a neck injury 20 days ago against the Raiders, is done for the season.
His roster spot will be replaced by former Chiefs tackle Jared Gaither.  Waived after a critical false start late in an eventual loss to the Steelers, Gaither’s contract has been claimed by San Diego.
The 4-7 Chargers have lost six games in a row.

Tyler Palko will start again as Orton prepares

Pittsburgh Steelers v Kansas City ChiefsGetty Images
Last week, the Chiefs claims quarterback Kyle Orton on waivers from the Broncos.  As the Chiefs prepare to play their second game with Orton on the roster — a return trip by the former Bears quarterback to Chicago — Orton won’t be starting.
Via multiple Twitter accounts, coach Todd Haley said Wednesday that Tyler Palko will get the nod for a third straight week.
The good news for Orton, and the bad news for Palko, is that Orton will take roughly 40 percent of the practice reps with the first-team offense, which means that it’s only a matter of time before Orton makes his debut.
With the Chiefs at 4-7, it may not matter to the team.  With Orton due to become a free agent in March, it may matter a lot to him.

chestermcglockton
Chester McGlockton, a former NFL defensive tackle who made four Pro Bowls with the Oakland Raiders in the 1990s, has died of an apparent heart attack. He was 42.
McGlockton had been an assistant coach at Stanford for the last two years.
Everyone in the Stanford Football family is deeply saddened by the passing of Chester McGlockton,” Stanford head coach David Shaw said in a statement. “For the past two seasons, Chester has been a valuable member of our football staff and a wonderful friend to us all. Stafford has begun throwing without the glove

Philip Zaroo - MLive.com
ALLEN PARK — It looks like the most infamous glove in Detroit Lions lore is just that - part of history - as quarterback Matthew Stafford was throwing without protective handwear at Tuesday's practice.
Stafford wore the glove for three games after fracturing the index finger on his right (throwing) hand against Denver. During that time, he was 93-of-144 for 940 yards seven touchdowns and nine interceptions - a steep drop from is first-half numbers: 183-of-299 for 2,179 yards, 19 touchdowns and four interceptions.
Despite the huge statistical disparity, Stafford has maintained his play hasn't been influenced by the glove. The story should get a little clearer Sunday night against New Orleans.

All signs point to Andy Reid staying put in Philly

A Philadelphia Eagles fan shouts "Fire Andy" towards the Eagles head coach Andy Reid in PhiladelphiaReuters
At a time when the folks in Philly have once again broken out the pitchforks and torches, their efforts to clamor for change in the coaching ranks of the local NFL team ultimately could fall on deaf ears.
Though more people than ever can now envision the end of the Andy Reid era after 13 years featuring one Super Bowl appearance, the smart money in league circles remains on Reid staying put, even if the Dream Team fails (as expected) to make it to the playoffs.

Vick not expected to play until Week 14

Bo Wulf of the Eagles' official website concedes Michael Vick (ribs) will sit out Thursday night's game, "barring something unforeseen."
Vick lobbed passes to receivers Tuesday, but he's still unable to put much mustard on the ball. He'll benefit from the 10 days off before a Week 14 game at Miami. Coming off his first career 400-yard game, Vince Young is 11th in Rotoworld's initial Week 13 QB ranks.

Scott Linehan is reportedly a leading candidate for Washington State job

Matthew Stafford, Jim SchwartzAP
Mike Martz isn’t the only offensive coordinator in the NFC North that could attract interest in a college head coaching job.
Lions offensive coordinator Scott Linehan is mentioned asone of five candidates for the Washington State head coaching job, according to the Seattle Times.
A separate Seattle radio report listed Linehan as one of the three leading candidates.
Former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach looks like the favorite for the gig, so Linehan may not get a chance. It’s unclear if Linehan would want to leave the NFL, and the timing of the pro season makes it tough to take college jobs.

Cardinals rookie Sam Acho developing quickly

Cardinals fourth-round rookie OLB Sam Acho recorded two sacks, two forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery in Week 12 against the Rams.
His transition from college defensive end is going swimmingly, with five sacks in five starts since taking over for a washed-up Joey Porter. Acho's surprisingly quick development bodes well for a Cardinals defense desperately in need of a young pass rusher. He should be a fixture for 2012.

Vikings pushing for Arden Hills location

Brad Biggs - National Football Post
The Minnesota Vikings want to go full-speed ahead with plans to construct a new stadium in Arden Hills, but the team has agreed to have discussions with Minneapolis officials about a possible site there.
According to Mike Kaszuba of the Minneapolis Star Tribune, the meeting was “reluctantly agreed” to on Tuesday by the team while it still pushed to gets its Ramsey County plan through.

11/30 Wednesday morning one-liners

Chris Clemons, Kevin KolbAP
Bills coach Chan Gailey praised the work of WR Brad Smith.
The Dolphins’ recent winning ways killed their chances to draft Stanford QB Andrew Luck, but USC’s Matt Barkley, Oklahoma’s Landry Jones and Baylor’s Robert Griffin all could be draft-day options in Miami.
Former Patriots WR/DB Troy Brown likes what he sees in current Patriots WR/DB Julian Edelman.
Said Jets QB Mark Sanchez of the way the team played in the win over the Bills, “We play like that again, lose the turnover battle, lose time of possession, all those stats – I think our chances of winning the game were probably somewhere like 20, 30 percent chance. Maybe less. Maybe in the teens. Because you can’t win like that. That’s not a winning formula.”

Falcons could be without Grimes this weekend

Falcons LCB Brent Grimes could miss time with the knee injury sustained in Week 12.
One of the league's top corners this year, Grimes played just six snaps against the Vikings. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution suggests his status could be in doubt for Sunday versus the Texans. With Kelvin Hayden (dislocated toe) sidelined, Christopher Owens and Dominique Franks will be in the spotlight.

Schwartz's response to Suh and the suspension

Jim SchwartzAP
There’s been talk in the last few days that Lions coach Jim Schwartz deserves some blame for allowing Ndamukong Suh to get out of control. For his part, Schwartz thinks Suh is the one who needs to be accountable.
It puts the team in a bad position,” Schwartz said of Suh’s two-game suspension, which he earned by stomping on Green Bay’s Evan Dietrich-Smith on Thanksgiving.
In comments to the media today, Schwartz said that what the Lions need from Suh is the same toughness he has exhibited in the past — without the extracurricular activities after the whistle.

Jake Delhomme will join the Texans

Cleveland Browns quarterback Jake Delhomme is hit by Atlanta Falcons John Abraham as he makes a throw during the fourth quarter of their NFL football game in ClevelandReuters
Jake Delhomme is going to take a break from racing horses to get back in a playoff race.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Texans will sign Jake Delhomme for quarterback depth. Delhomme is expected to compete with Kellen Clemens to backup rookie T.J. Yates for Houston.
Of course, that may just be the short-term plan.  Delhomme or Clemens could earn playing time if Yates struggles and they pick up the offense quickly in practice.  The plan for this week is for Delhomme to be the No. 3 quarterback.
Signing Delhomme could be a sign that the Texans genuinely want to give Yates a chance. Delhomme seems more like a mentor for Yates and a great team presence rather than someone you want starting anytime soon.
Then again, the Texans will have an experienced quarterback at the ready for their playoff run if all else fails. Jake Delhomme possibly starting another playoff game is not something we anticipated writing about this year.

Video: Mariucci says someone other than Schwartz should discipline Suh

Baltimore Ravens vs Detroit LionsGetty Images
In his first appearance on PFT Live, NFL Network analyst (and former Lions and 49ers head coach) Steve Mariucci offered his insights on theNdamukong Suh situation.
On the question of whether the Lions need to do something to reel him in, Mariucci believes that someone other than coach Jim Schwartz needs to do the reeling.
Coach Mariucci pointed out that, when he suspended receiver Terrell Owens after T.O. celebrated on the star at Texas Stadium, Mariucci’s relationship with Owens thereafter became strained.  And so, for issues like this, discipline coming from the owner or the front office could allow the coach to maintain the relationship with the player.
